Da Nang People’s Committee (PC) Chairman Huynh Duc Tho has recently urged the municipal Department of Transport to finalise, no later than July, all the necessary procedures to start the building of a new tunnel under the Han River.

Approval has been given by the city leader to establish a Steering Committee for the project in an attempt to accelerate the construction of the new tunnel.  Accordingly, the municipal PC Vice Chairman, Mr Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, has been appointed head of the committee, whilst the Director of the city’s Department of Transport, Mr Le Van Trung, has been chosen as its deputy head.

In addition, Chairman Duc Tho has asked other local relevant agencies to complete their preparations for the project as soon as possible.  The district authorities of Hai Chau and Son Tra, along with the city's Land Development Fund, have been urged to accelerate site clearance and the compensation of affected families in accordance with the city’s rules.

The city leader has also stressed the need for relevant agencies and consultancy units to collect more opinions from experts before selecting the best design for the new tunnel.

The municipal Department of Transport has been given responsibility for developing detailed plans to ensure the aesthetic of the project’s architectural designs and landscapes.

Meanwhile, the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment has been urged to work closely with local relevant agencies to estimate the total land area required for the project.  Importance has also been attached to appeals for investment into the project, which will be implemented on the build-transfer investment model.

The 860m-long 6-lane tunnel will connect the intersection of Tran Phu and Dong Da in Hai Chau District with Son Tra District’s Van Don.  The tunnel is intended to ease traffic congestion and ensure the smoother movement of vehicles on major streets, especially Tran Phu and Bach Dang.
