The event was co-chaired by municipal People’s Committee Vice Chairman Ho Ky Minh and Ms Lauren Sorkin, the Co-Director for 100RC in the Asia and Pacific region.

The Da Nang Resilience Strategy aims to develop the city into a ‘peaceful’, ‘dynamic’, ‘prepared’ and ‘connected’ locality in the global context of the current climate changes.

Under the strategy, focii will be on developing local storm resistant housing projects, promoting the implementation of the city’s business disaster micro-insurance programme, and ensuring financial reserves to better cope with natural disasters.  Also, importance will be attached to refurbishing local public areas, and enhancing the efficiency of the operation of the city’s Disaster Management Centre.

At the event, the participants contributed their opinions and comments on how to implement the Resilience Strategy in an effective manner.

Vice Chairman Minh remarked, “In mid-October, the city authorities will meet with representatives from local relevant agencies to mainstream the resilience strategy into the city’s action programme for 2017”.

He added, “My city is focusing on developing a synchronous infrastructure system in local residential areas, creating more green spaces across the city, and promoting investment into hi-tech industry, tourism and services.  Also, greater efforts will be made to develop effective disaster preparedness and mitigation plans, and ensure close contact between local relevant agencies and residents in case a natural disaster should occur”.

Also on Wednesday, a project entitled ‘Energy Efficiency in Buildings’ was officially launched in the city.  The project, which will last until November 2017, will focus on developing energy policies to be applied in buildings across the city.  In addition, it will provide the city with the specialised knowledge, human resources, and necessary technical facilities to ensure the efficient use of energy in local buildings.
