Following recent approval by the Da Nang authorities, work has now started on a road tunnel to take Tran Phu under the busy junction with Le Duan.  The project, near the western end of the Han River Bridge, is expected to be completed by late February 2017.

As a result, cars (but not motorbikes) are now banned from using the Han River Bridge during the construction period.  Signboards have been placed at the eastern end of this bridge, the western and eastern ends of the Rong (Dragon) Bridge, the intersection of Dien Bien Phu, Le Duan and Ly Thai To, the intersection of Nguyen Tat Thanh and 3 February, and the intersection of Dien Bien Phu and Nguyen Tri Phuong.

The project is expected to cost 137.4 billion VND and will be funded by the city’s budget and from other sources.  The 40m-long, 7.5m-wide tunnel will have a speed limit of 60km/h, and its northern and southern approach roads will be 115m and 101.2m long respectively.  The project will include laying pre-cast terrazzo tiles on the tunnel’s pavements, building a drainage system, and installing lighting systems.

The municipal People’s Committee is the developer of the project, whilst the Management Board of Public Transportation, Construction and Investment Projects will be responsible for managing the project.  The Transport Engineering Consulting Company No 5 (TECCO5) is the project’s consultants.  The contractors are a joint venture between the Civil Engineering Construction Corporation No 1 (CIENCO 1) and the city-based Nhat Huy company.

Da Nang’s traffic police officers and inspectors will be on duty near the site of the project to regulate traffic and avoid traffic congestion during the construction period.
