Over the past 20 years, Da Nang has seen tremendous changes in its traffic infrastructure, which have significantly improved the city’s socio-economic development.

The city is now famous for its amazing and unique bridges.  There are many bridges spanning the Han River, and they all feature unique architectural characteristics when compared with others nationwide.

The construction of the Han River Swing Bridge, which officially opened to traffic on 29 March 2000, marked an important milestone in the development of the local traffic infrastructure. 

Following the success of this bridge, other bridges have since been built across the river.  Notable are the Thuan Phuoc, Tuyen Son, Rong (Dragon) and Tran Thi Ly bridges.  The stunning beauty of these bridges makes the river sparkle and look very beautiful at night, which helps to attract more visitors to the city.

The 3-level Hue T-junction overpass, the largest of its kind in Viet Nam, officially opened to traffic on 29 March 2015 to mark the 40^th anniversary of the liberation of Da Nang.

The city authorities have recently revealed plans to construct a road tunnel for Tran Phu, at the western end of the Han River bridge, and one at the junction of Dien Bien Phu, Nguyen Tri Phuong and Le Do.  These tunnels will help to ease the current traffic congestion in the inner-city.

In addition to gathering opinions from local residents and experts, the city authorities have approved a contest to design a road tunnel under the Han River.  The contest will be open to any domestic and foreign individuals and organisations.  The new tunnel will run under the river from the roundabout junction of Bach Dang, 3 February and Nhu Nguyet streets in Hai Chau District to the intersection of Tran Hung Dao, Van Don and Tran Thanh Tong streets on the eastern bank. 

Over the past 20 years, a total of 800 roads have been built or upgraded, which has ensured the smooth movement of vehicles from the city centre to the outer rural and mountainous areas.

The 1^st stage of a ring road on the southern side of the city has been completed, whilst site clearance work is now underway to begin the project’s 2^nd phase.  Also, the northwest approach road to the Hue T-junction overpass, and the north-west traffic axis No 1, have both been completed.

In addition to the building of the city’s Tran Dai Nghia Street connecting with Hoi An and Dien Ban District, both in Quang Nam Province, a section of the 14B Highway linking the city’s Tuy Loan village and the province’s Ha Nha Bridge has been widened.

As for transport links north to Thua Thien-Hue Province, a new road tunnel will be constructed under the Hai Van Pass.  The new tunnel will be parallel to the existing one, and it will help to considerably shorten the travel time between the 2 localities.
