This was the 3rd consecutive year that the city had seen a slight decrease in the number of road traffic accidents, deaths and injuries, but the number of deaths is still too high.
A total of over 33 billion VND in fines was imposed on over 50,000 road traffic violators. Also, 356 cars and over 2,900 motorbikes were temporarily seized, whilst over 8,200 offenders had their driving licences temporarily revoked.
The above statistics were announced at a meeting on Wednesday held by the Traffic Police Division of the municipal Police Department.
The tragedies were mainly caused by road users’ incompliance with national traffic regulations.
At the meeting, the Director of the Department, Colonel Le Van Tam, urged local police forces to take more effective measures to further reduce the number of road accidents, ease traffic congestion, and crack down on illegal races along the city’s streets.
In particular, greater efforts should be made to ensure traffic safety and security before, during, and after this year’s key economic, political and cultural events, especially the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Week in November.
Director Tam also underlined the need to deal speedily with any complaints from local residents and visitors about transport-related issues which might be submitted, in either English or Vietnamese, via the official Facebook page of his Department.
Special heed will be paid to encouraging local traffic police officers to show a spirit of friendliness, high responsibility, and good working performance.
Also at the meeting, 2 units from the Division were honoured with the ‘Victorious Units’ title.
