Bringing happiness to the poor
Although located in Da Nang’s inner area, Hai Chau District’s Binh Thuan Ward has several hundred poor families. In attempting to help them through their difficulties, the ward authorities and local organisations have over recent years been actively involved in raising funds to give meaningful gifts to them.

In particular, last year the ward’s militiamen and teachers from the Cam Van Preschool raised money to buy Tet gifts, worth 300,000 VND each, to give to 30 local poor families.
One of the beneficiaries was the family of Mrs Nguyen Thi Hoa. Hoa and her husband earn their living by repairing bicycles and selling soya milk, and their only son suffers from a congenital disability. She could not hide her emotions when she received the meaningful gift, and remarked “Over recent years, the ward’s organisations, especially the local militia force, have given great care to my family, and this helps us over our difficulties and brings more happiness into our lives”.
Another beneficiary was Mr Vo Minh Phuong, a war invalid who suffered a stroke and has been bedridden for the past 13 years. Since his family is very poor, local authorities and organisations jointly raised money to help to repair his downgraded house.
The head of the ward’s military command, Mr Thai Dinh Quoc, remarked “Over recent years, our unit has always given great concern to local social issues, especially helping local poor families, Agent Orange-affected children, and the disabled. In the near future, they intend to build a charity house for a family of a poor demobilised soldier”.
