Over the past 5 years, the Da Nang People's Court dealt with an average of 100 family and marriage disputes each year, and 90% of them were divorce cases.

The people involved in divorce settlements are usually aged between 25 and 45.  The main causes of divorce are domestic violence, differences between the spouses’ characters, opinions and living attitudes, or one spouse sinking deeply into such social evils as alcohol, gambling, betting or drugs.

Lawyer Vo Van Dang from the city’s Tan Hoa Lawyer Office says that modern society, with its strong development of all economic sectors, has unintentionally broken traditional Vietnamese family values.  The significant rise in the number of young couples living as husband and wife although not married, and those having premarital sex, has also brought severe consequences for families and society.

In addition, the traditional conflicts between older and younger generations have taken some unsettling turns.  Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in the number of domestic violence cases.

In attempting to create gender equality and reduce domestic violence, 189 training courses on preventing domestic violence were held in Da Nang between 2009 and 2016, and they together attracted 12,831 attendees.

Over the years, over 50 competitions, talk shows and exchange seminars aimed at reducing domestic violence were organised across the city.  6,000 documents and books about the Domestic Violence Prevention Law were printed, whilst 50,500 leaflets and 7,000 handbooks about laws on gender equality and domestic violence prevention were distributed.

Also, seminars on preserving and promoting the traditional cultural values of Vietnamese families, and on gender equality, were organised in the city.  In addition, 150 banners about domestic violence prevention were displayed along some of the major streets.
