Over the first half of this year, Da Nang’s police officers detected and successfully handled 198 criminal cases in Da Nang, involving a total of 282 people.  In particular, the local police completed their investigations into 100% of the very serious criminal cases reported in the city.

A total of 116 suspects were prosecuted in 80 cases of trading and storing illegal drugs, and 1,298 drug users were detected and dealt with.

Over the period, administrative punishments were imposed for 346 social order violations involving a total of 764 offenders.  1,361 people involved in 305 cases of illegal gambling were also dealt with.

A total of nearly 19 billion VND in fines was imposed on over 25,800 road traffic violators across the city.

Thankfully, the city saw a slight decrease in the number of road traffic accidents, deaths, and injuries against the same period last year.

Most notably, there were no reports of mafia gangs operating in the city during the 6-month period.

The above figures were released at a meeting on Wednesday to review the performance of the city’s Department of Police over the first half of this year, and to discuss their tasks for the second half of the year.

Municipal People’s Committee Chairman Huynh Duc Tho urged the local police to continue their efforts to launch sweeping raids against all kinds of crimes, especially social evils, drug-related crimes, and organised criminal gangs.

More public surveillance cameras should be installed in public areas across the city in order to monitor and deal with both security and traffic violations.

In particular, greater efforts should be made to ensure traffic safety and security before, during, and after this year’s key economic, political and cultural events, especially the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Week in November.

Also at the review meeting, a second-class Fatherland Protection Order from Viet Nam’s President was awarded to the municipal Police Department in recognition of their remarkable achievements over the 2011 - 2015 period.

The Director of the Department, Colonel Le Van Tam, was honoured with a third-class Victory Medal from the President.

The Crime Investigation Division and 2 of its individuals were presented with Certificates of Merit from the Prime Minister, whilst the Thanh Khe District Police received an emulation flag from the Prime Minister for their great efforts in ensuring local security.
