The Da Nang authorities recently gave the go-ahead for the implementation of a pilot project to replace 2,996 of the existing high pressure sodium lights with energy-efficient light emitting diodes (LED) ones along 12 local major streets.  The replacement work will cost less than 40 billion VND funded from the city budget.

This project is in preparation for the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week (AELW) which will be held in the city from 5 to 11 November, and in compliance with the national laws on efficient and economical use of energy in the street lighting system.

The project will help the city promote the application of energy-saving lighting technologies in enhancing the quality of the local public lighting system, reducing electricity and maintenance costs as well as greenhouse gas emissions, thereby boosting the development of the local tourism, and the city’s progress as a whole.

The recalled sodium lights will be placed along some roads in Hoa Vang District and on the campuses of the total 78 junior and senior high schools there.

The project will be implemented on the ESCO investment model.  An energy service company or energy savings company (ESCO) is a commercial or non-profit business providing a broad range of energy solutions.  Included are designs and implementation of energy savings projects, retrofitting, energy conservation, energy infrastructure outsourcing, power generation and energy supply, and risk management.

The new LED lights will be put into use by late October.

Apart from installing energy-efficient street lighting system, following recent approval by the municipal government, new public surveillance cameras will be placed along the Vo Chi Cong and Truong Son streets in Cam Le District.  The cost of placing new cameras will be about 16.7 billion VND funded from this year’s local traffic infrastructure programme.

The installation of cameras aims to monitor and deal with traffic violations on the 2 streets which are usually packed with countless vehicles, especially dumper trucks carrying soil and stone.  The careless drivers of these vehicles have caused possible tragic traffic accidents over recent years.
