At 6.55am that day, 28-year-old fisherman Cao Minh Tam was reported to be suffering from severe abdominal pains. At the time the vessel was fishing about 75 nautical miles off the province’s coast.
After receiving an SOS message from the boat’s captain, staff at the Viet Nam Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (Viet Nam MRCC) contacted the Vietnam National Institute of Maritime Medicine to ask for first aid instructions. At 7.40am, Viet Nam MRCC asked the Da Nang MRCC to send out its rescue ship SAR 274 which was operating in the waters of the province, to help the sick crew member.
By 11.40am, SAR 274 had arrived at the scene and the patient was transferred to the rescue ship for initial first aid before being transported back to the mainland for further treatment in a hospital in the province.
