The intention is to restructure the local agriculture, with a focus on enhancing the added value of agricultural products and upgrading rural areas across the city in an effective and sustainable manner.
Under the programme, the focus is on developing locally-made products and services in key categories. They are food, drinks, herbal products, fabric and garment, souvenirs, furniture, decorations and rural tourism services and sales activities. In particular, local small-and medium-sized entrepreneurs, small-scale home producers and cooperatives are playing a vital role in producing these items.
According to the municipal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, there are many highly-competitive signature products which are indigenous to local rural areas. Included are seed rice from Hoa Tien Commune, ‘banh trang’ (rice paper) from Tuy Loan Village, Ba Lieu family-run business’s ‘banh kho me’ (dried sesame seed cakes), ‘ruou can’ (rice wine drunk out of a jar through pipes) from Phu Tuc Village, Ba Lieu family-run business’s ‘tre’ (a kind of fermented pork), ‘nuoc mam’ (fish sauce) from Nam O Village, and eco-tourism services in Phong Nam Village.
The Deputy Director of the Department, Mr Hoang Thanh Hoa, said that many local wards and communes are giving importance to accelerating the production of their signature products, and promoting their advertising activities. Such locally-made products as Ba De ‘tre’ and Nam O fish sauce have already been registered for the intellectual property rights of brand names, and granted food safety certificates.
Mr Hoa remarked that the OCOP programme helps to boost local production and business activities, promote rural development and poverty reduction, create more employment for local residents to increase their incomes, and enhance start-up activities. The city is aiming to reach its target of each local ward/ commune having its own key product with specific advantages by 2030.
Mr Nguyen Hoang Lich, the Director of the city-based Hoang Lich company, proudly said that such his company’s products as Tien Ong ‘dau tram’ (palm oil) and Linh Ung ‘dau gio’ (medicated oil) have affirmed their strong positions in the local market. Over recent years, these products have been chosen by the city authorities as tourism souvenirs presented to domestic and foreign guests arriving in the city for international large-scale events.
