Previously, the woman had been admitted to the hospital with shortness of breath and signs of high blood pressure due to the tumour.

With the help of a CT scan, the doctors detected the tumour reaching 30cm in diameter in the patient’s neck.

The tumour was gradually invading her windpipe, which was making it very difficult for the patient to breathe, leading breathing pauses (apnea).

After multiple consultations and examinations, the doctors decided to conduct the immediate surgery to save her life in a timely fashion.

Doctor Than Trong Vu, who directly conducted the surgery, said: “It’s a very difficult case because the tumour was pressing against her windpipe, and her blood pressure was high”.  The surgeons were very cautious about removing the tumour in order to avoid unexpected injuries to organs nearby.

According to the patient, she has lived with the tumour for 40 years.  It was small at first, but it has grown abnormally larger over time, and this might threaten her life.

After the operation, the patient’s health is now gradually recovering.
