The fishermen were 48-year-old Dang Van Tuoi, and his wife, 46-year-old Huynh Thi Ha, both residing in Son Tra District’s Nai Hien Dong Ward.
Previously at 9.00am on 9 March, the Son Tra District Border Guard Station received SOS message from Captain Tuoi’s fishing boat DNa 43878. The boat was suffered an engine breakdown, and it was then adrift in the sea.
After receiving the message, the city’s Border Guard force urged coastal information stations to keep contact with the distressed boat, and asked fishing vessels and other ships operating nearby to help it. In addition, a rescue ship with a lifeboat and 10 rescuers was sent to the scene to help the victims and tow the boat back to the mainland.
However, the rescuers found it very hard to tow the boat back to the mainland because it was stuck in big rapids. At 6.00pm on 11 March, the two fishermen were transferred to the rescue ship and brought back to the Man Quang Border Guard Station, whilst the rescuers were taking various proactive measures to tow the boat back to the mainland.
