Over recent years, the management board of the Dong Da Market at 42 Luong Ngoc Quyen in Da Nang’s Hai Chau District has become actively involved in appealing for donations from traders and shoppers to help the poor and needy.

In particular, the market’s management board has placed a donation box in front of the entrance gate to the venue to raise money from shoppers. The money has been collected from this box every 2 years, and it then has gone to help sick people and the poor in the locality.

A total of over 700 traders are now operating at the market, and the majority of them are willing to participate in charitable activities.

Ms Nguyen Thi Dung who is selling coconuts at the market is a typical example. Over recent years, the kind-hearted woman has donated 12 million VND each year to help a total of 12 poor traders here.

Every year, a total of more than 100 million VND is raised from the market’s traders to implement charitable activities. In detail, the donated money is used to buy gifts for poor traders, to help them repair their downgraded houses, and to fund the operation of the charity kitchen at the Da Nang Cancer Hospital.

In the similar vein, over 100 members of the Da Nang Construction Contractors Club are actively engaged in helping the poor.

In attempting to raise even more money from local individuals and organisations, these members have established a charitable club named ‘Thien An’.

Last year, the Thien An Club donated tens of millions of VND to 32-year-old Pham Ngoc Tuan from Quang Nam Province’s Duy Xuyen District to help cover the cost of medical treatment for him. The poor man was seriously injured from a road accident, causing him traumatic brain injury, dementia, and leg broken.

The club’s leader Tran Dang Khoa said “My club is aiming at helping 2 needy people to build their new houses every year, with the fund donated by the club’s members”.

Each of the 52m2 charity house, with one living room, one bedroom, one kitchen and one toilet, will be built at a cost of around 100 million VND.
