Warning over criminals posing as police
People are being urged to guard themselves against fake police after many victims in some localities nationwide lost a lot of money for scammers.
The Da Nang Department of Police has issued a warning about fraudsters who are impersonating local police officers over the phone to try to cheat people out of their large amount of money.
On 5 and 6 October, the Da Nang police received complaints from a total of 22 residents in Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City, and the provinces of Quang Ninh and Ninh Binh about fraudulent phone calls.
The scammers claimed they were Da Nang police officers investigating crimes, and they suspected these victims mentioned above of having involvement in criminal rings.
The fake police then asked for the victims to transfer their money in saving accounts to the Da Nang police bank accounts to verify its origin.
If the victims refused to co-operate, the scammers threatened that they would be arrested for several months to undergo rigorous investigations.
The impersonators also claimed that if the victims’ innocence was proven, the money would be returned in a short period, and asked such deals to be kept secret.
To date, 2 people from these localities have fallen victim to the fake police as they transferred a large amount of money into the scammers’ bank accounts.
The swindlers used fake ID cards and opened bank accounts to obtain money transfers.
To avoid being swindled, people should never give away personal information over the phone to strangers or conduct money transfers without verifying necessary information.
In case of any suspicious acts or requests from unknown callers, please report to the local police or ring the hotline: 0694260260.
