At the event, Mr Nguyen Dang Huy, Deputy Director of the municipal Transport Department, highlighted the importance of applying an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) into the city’s urban transport system to partly ease traffic congestion, and to effectively use the existing transport infrastructure.

“ITS is a combination of leading-edge information and communication technologies used in transportation and traffic management systems in order to improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of transportation networks, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance drivers’ experiences”, Mr Huy noted.

Deputy Director Huy said in fact, Da Nang has taken the first steps to approach ITS through the implementation of its project on building and upgrading the traffic signals system to monitor traffic at intersections.

In particular, a total of 64 traffic light systems and 32 surveillance cameras have been installed at intersections. In addition, a meteorological observation station and a centralised transport control centre have been built in the city.

He also underscored the significance of building ITS standards which are considered as legal basis for the development of ITS in the locality in the coming time.

Moverover, Mr Huy highlighted the urgent need to develop plans and arrange human resources for ITS-related work, as well as to make a digital map which will show traffic conditions on local roads and share this information to road users.

Assoc Dr Phan Cao Tho, Rector of the Da Nang University of Technology and Education, asked the city authorities to apply the ITS app into the urban transport system in a suitable manner.

The General Secretary of the Da Nang Urban Planning and Development Association, Mr Nguyen Cuu Loan, underscored importance of relevant agencies’s close working with the local authorities to develop Da Nang into a smart transportation urban.
