Over recent days, in the impacts of the intensified cold air, north-northeast winds at levels 5-6, with a gust of level 8, very heavy rough seas, high waves and rising sea-levels, devastating erosion has occurred along beaches alongside the Hoang Sa, Vo Nguyen Giap, and Truong Sa coastal streets in Son Tra and Ngu Hanh Son districts.

In the Tho Quang and Man Thai wards of Son Tra District, some fishing vessels and coracle boats were sunk by the strong waves, making fishing tools on board washing ashore.

Parts of the embankment that runs along the Sao Bien public swimming area, built by coastal restaurants, were worn away by wave action and tidal currents, exposing the steel bars inside the structure, and creating deep waterholes on the beach.

Facing the same problem, the embankment along the Son Thuy public beach in Ngu Hanh Son District’s Hoa Hai Ward is now at high risk of collapse with many severe cracks.

Meanwhile, near the erosion sites, the moving of the sand along beaches has also gradually filled up the drainage outlets to the sea at such many areas as Man Thai, My Khe, and My An, which might cause severe inundation at nearby residential areas and tourist quarters in case of torrential downpours.

Tuesday into Friday, rainy and cold conditions will continue to prevail in Da Nang and elsewhere in the mid-central region as the cold air intensifies and spills into the region, according to the Mid-Central Region Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

It is noticeable that torrential rain is predicted to batter some parts of the region from Thua Thien - Hue to Quang Ngai.

Da Nang is anticipated to brace for moderate and heavy downpours. The districts of Hoa Vang, Cam Le, Son Tra and Ngu Hanh Son are likely to see the rainfall accumulation of between 20 and 40mm per day, and even over 60mm in some of their parts.

Likewise, the amount of rain that falls on the districts of Lien Chieu, Thanh Khe, and Hai Chau is much likely to range from 10 to 30mm, and even over 50mm in some parts.

The city will see day-time temperatures drop to 18-20 degrees Celsius with chilly nights, and even plummet to be as low as between 17 and 19 degrees Celsius in its mountainous areas.

Under the influence of the cold snap and a fresh tropical depression near the East Sea, north-northwestern winds levels 3-4 are expected to appear in the mainland of the city, whilst winds level 6, with a gust of levels 7- 8, and heavy rough seas, are likely to be seen off the coast of the city. North-easterly winds levels 6-7, with a gust of levels 8-9, and very rough sea is reported off the Hoang Sa islands.

In the current context of a low-pressure zone formed to south of the East Sea which might strengthen into a tropical depression in the few coming days, the city’s Steering Committees for Natural Disaster Mitigation and Control, and Search and Rescue, has asked concerned local agencies to keep all fishing boats operating at sea well informed of the unfavourable weather conditions in order to handle any unexpected incidents.

Besides, local functional bodies are taking effective measures to cope with flash floods and landslides in mountainous, low-lying areas and locations along the banks of the Cu De and Tuy Loan rivers.
