New techniques applied in treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysm
Surgeons from the Da Nang-based C Hospital, with the help of their collegues from the Ho Chi Minh-based Cho Ray Hospital, on Thursday, successfully performed an abdominal aortic aneurysm intervention on a patient by using the stent grafting technique.
The patient is now gradually recovering after the one-hour operation, and is expected to be discharged from hospital over the coming days.
The technique transfer was part of the 2 hospitals-implemented project to enhance the capacity of implementing technical services for the 2018 - 2020 period with a total of 9 technical packages conducted at 6 special wards in the city’s hospital.
According to doctor Hoang Phuong, the Dean of Cardiology Ward of the Da Nang Hospital C, abdominal aortic aneurysm is a common vascular disease that affects elderly population.
Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm is one of the most fatal surgical emergencies, with an overall mortality rate of 90%.
Most aneurysms rupture into the retroperitoneal cavity, which results in the classical triad of pain, hypotension, and a pulsatile mass.
Endovascular stent grafting, or endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), is a newer form of treatment for abdominal aortic aneurysm that is less invasive than open surgery.
Accordingly, an endovascular stent graft is used to reinforce the wall of the aorta and to help keep the damaged area from rupturing.
Because it is less invasive than open surgery, the recovery time for endovascular stent grafting may be faster.
Usually, the patient can return home within a week, and return to normal activities in 4 to 6 weeks.
