Efforts to ensure enough tap water supplies for locals
According to General Director of the Da Nang Water Supply Company (DAWACO) Ho Huong, recent days have seen a significant increase in the salinity levels of the Cau Do (Red Bridge) River.
In particular, the salinity levels of the river have been between 100mg/l and 600mg/l. The highest salinity levels recorded at 4.00pm on Monday were 1,163mg/l, around 5 times higher than the allowed limits.
Although the river has continuously suffered from severe salt-water contamination, DAWACO has exerted its efforts to use all possible water resources to ensure enough fresh water supplies for local residents.
“On 4 February (the 30th day of the 12th lunar month), DAWACO operated the An Trach Pumping Station with full of capacity to supply around 292,000m3 of freshwater, equivalent to that during the peak period of summer season. During the Tet holiday, the city’s tap water consumption capacity decreased to between 230,000m3 and 240,000m3 per day” Mr Huong added.
General Director Huong noted his company continues keeping a close watch on the salinity levels of the Cau Do River. If the salinity levels of the river continue to increase, DAWACO will discharge water from hydropower reservoirs in the upstream of the Vu Gia River to ensure enough tap water supplies for locals in the time ahead.
