Tap water is brackish, turbid, but remains in safe limits
General Director of the Da Nang Water Supply Company (DAWACO) Ho Huong has affirmed that, although tap water is currently brackish and turbid, it has remained in safe limits.
The An Trach Pumping Station is now operating at full capacity to provide tap water for the Red Bridge water supply plant. |
His statement came after many families across the city had continuously complained on social networks about tap water quality over recent days.
Tap water is brackish if the salinity level is over 100mg/l. It was recently reported that Since 10 February, the salinity level of tap water has ranged from 150 mg/l to 232 mg/l.
This issue was caused by the fact that the Cau Do (Red Bridge) River has suffered from severe salt-water contamination over the past 14 days.
DAWACO reassured the public as saying that the current salinity level of tap water is much lower than the warning level stipulated in the national technical regulations issued by the Vietnamese Ministry of Health regarding drinking water quality.
In detail, according to these national requirements, in the mainland, the safe salinity level in drinking water is under 250 mg/l, whilst in coastal and island areas, the maximum allowable concentration of all dissolved salts in drinking water is 300 mg/l.
DAWACO is taking effective measures to ensure that the highest salinity level of tap water must be under 200mg/l in the existing problem of severe salt-water contamination.
The An Trach Pumping Station is now operating at full capacity to provide tap water for the Red Bridge water supply plant in a bid to ensure sufficient water for residents’ daily lives, agriculture and industrial production in the city.
Another issue sparking the public concern is that suspended solids concentrations have made local tap water turbid.
Recently-conducted inspections made by DAWACO showed that the turbidity level of checked samples of tap water was reported at 1.18 NTU (nephelometric turbidity units) and 0.71 NTU in the districts of Thanh Khe and Cam Le, respectively.
Such parameters are still lower than the warning level of 2 NTU stipulated by the national technical regulations applied for drinking water quality.
In its reports recently submitted to the municipal government, once again, DAWACO affirmed that such current water quality parameters as pH, ORP, turbidity, chlorine, temperature and suspended solids content are within allowable limits.
