Storm Podul weakens into tropical depression; rains continue nationwide

This year’s fourth tropical storm, named Podul, weakened briefly into a tropical depression Friday morning after having made landfall on a stretch from Nghe An to Quang Binh provinces.

According to the National Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Centre, under the influence of the tropical depression, today and tomorrow, mid-central regional localities, including Da Nang, are bracing heavy downpours in many of their parts.

From tomorrow until the National Day (2 September) moderate to heavy rains are expected to pour down onto the northern region.

The depression is unleashing torrential downpours to localities from Thanh Hoa to Quang Tri with the total rainfall accumulation of between 250 and 400mm.

Likewise, the amount of rain that falls on the central province of Thua Thien Hue, and Hoa Binh, Son La, Yen Bai and Phu Tho Province in northern Viet Nam is ranging from 200mm to 300mm.

Da Nang and the south of northern delta are bracing for rain of milder intensity, hovering at between 100mm and 200mm.

The cloudy weather and showers, accompanied with thunderstomrs, are seen in Da Nang from now until 4 September.

On Thursday afternoon, 84 fishing vessels, with a total of 1,182 crew members  were operating at sea, with none of them conducting fishing activities in dangerous waters.

Until now, all the fishermen have been notified about the location, direction and developments of the tropical depression.

No storm-caused human casualties have been reported. 

A total of 78 residential houses in the central provinces of Ha Tinh and Quang Binh have had their roofs blown off.

A fishing vessels from Quang Binh was sunk by storm-triggered strong sea waves, but luckily, all crew member on board were rescued.

As many as 13 flights between Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hue, Nghe An’s Vinh and Quang Binh’s Dong Hoi by carriers Viet Nam Airlines, JetStar Pacific and Vasco were cancelled on Thursday, accrding to the Viet Nam Airlines Group.
