High tides and salinity affect the city's water supply
Starting from 6 October, the Cau Do (Red Bridge) River has been suffering from salt-water contamination at the level of more than 500mg/l because hydropower reservoirs upstream in the basin of the Vu Gia River have discharged a low volume of water last weekend. As a result, the Red Bridge River has suffered salinity intrusion again.
In particular, between noon and 5pm on 8 October, the salinity level of the Cau Do River hit over 2,000mg/l, 10 times higher than the allowed limits. Therefore, some water supply plants have been facing severe water resource shortages thereby failing to ensure sufficient water supplies for local residents.
In order to handle this problem, the Da Nang Water Supply Company (DAWACO) has to operate the An Trach Pumping Station at full capacity to provide enough water source for the Red Bridge and International Airport water supply plants.
Also, in the evening of 8 October, the A Vuong and Song Bung 4 hydropower reservoirs discharged water at the total capacity of 128m3/s.
It is expected that this morning, the salinity level of the Cau Do River lightly decreased.
