Recovery and cleanup efforts after Matmo

Under the impact of the circulation of Matmo, this year’s fifth storm, on Wednesday and Thursday, Da Nang braced for prolonged heavy rain, accompanied by strong winds, which resulted in damage to the infrastructure system, including hundreds of fallen trees blocking many roads and landslides and damaged traffic signs. The municipal authorities, therefore, have being making every effort to deal with the aftermath of the storm, which has now weakened into a low pressure zone in Cambodia.

The traffic police force and functional units were on duty at all odd hours to clear fallen trees and ensure smooth traffic movement.

According to preliminary statistics released by the city’s Green Trees-Park Company, a total of over 560 trees alongside local streets were uprooted during the storm. The re-planting of all the fallen trees had been completed by 10:00am on Thursday.

On Thursday afternoon, the municipal Department of Construction asked investors and contractors to immediately stop the operation of overhead tower cranes, lower anchor hooks at the construction sites for high-rises and tenements which might pose danger to by-passers.

According to Mr Mai Ma, the Director of the municipal Water Drainage and Wastewater Treatment Company, heavy rains-sparked flooding in some parts of the city, including the districts of Lien Chieu and Cam Le. The company has operated flood control pumping stations, and asked residents living in the affected areas to open rainwater drainage grates.

Meanwhile, a large number of workers from the city’s Urban Environment Company have been sent to districts across the city to tidy up affected- streets and residential areas.

In the districts of Hai Chau, Cam Le, Son Tra and Hoa Vang, some families suffered short power outages between Wednesday evening and Thirsday morning due to damaged power transmission lines.

According to the Da Nang Power One Member Company Limited, by 11:00am on Thursday, the electricity supplies to the affected households have now been restored.

Fortunately, no human casualties have been reported in the city.

Under the impact of the circulation of the low pressure zone, mid-central regional localities, including Da Nang, are forecast to continue bracing for heavy downpours, accompanied with possible thunderstorms and gale-force winds, in the coming days, the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting has warned.
