Da Nang’s retail sales are now showing early signs of life as there has been a significant rise in domestic spending by Da Nang residents at commercial centres, supermarkets and traditional markets.

This is considered as a positive sign for the recovery of the city’s retail sector when the coronavirus pandemic is brought under control in Da Nang, and Viet Nam at large.

In an effort to boost domestic consumption, many big retailers across the city, including Vincom, Co.opmart, Big C Mall, Lotte Mart and MM Mega Market, started to offer great deals on their products early June to encourage shoppers to spend more money.

Director of Co.op Mart Da Nang Phan Thong revealed that the purchasing power of local residents at Co.op Mart Da Nang has increased dramatically after the ‘The more steps you walk, the more money you save’ programme was launched on 4 June and it runs until19 June.

Mr Thong also said that around 90% of goods on sale at Co.op Mart Da Nang are are made locally, so the increase in buying local produce will support the recovery of domestic producers.

From now until the end of this year, the city’s retailers will offer great deals on their products and services to their customers in an effort to stimulate consumption in the city.

From 5 - 30 June, the Lotte Mart is offering up to 50% discount on its services and products in a bid to attract more shoppers.

Besides, traditional markets across the city, including Con, Dong Da, Moi and Hoa Cuong, have seen a dramatic increase in the purchasing power of goods.

Market stall holder Nguyen Thi Hoai at the Cam Le Market said the purchasing power of goods at the market has reached nearly 90% compared to the period of time in late April.

The Hoa Khanh Market in Lien Chieu District has seen a growing number of market-goers after the city’s schools reopened on 4 May.

Recent statistics released by the municipal Department of Industry and Trade show that the city’s total value of retail sales of goods and services between January and May hit an estimated 22,107.2 billion VND, down by 3.95% compared with the same period last year.

The Department is planning to develop a wide range of consumption stimulus and discount programmes for commercial centres, supermarkets, traditional markets, night markets, specialised shopping streets, and others from now until late this year. Da Nang’s consumers will benefit from these programmes to purchase high-quality goods at reasonable prices.
