Diabetic patient suffering serious septic shock saved

Doctors from the Vinmec Da Nang International Hospital have saved a 50 -year- old patient with the Type 2 diabetes mellitus-triggered septic shock hailing from Hoa Thuan Dong Ward, Hai Chau District.

The patient was rushed to the hospital due to in a critical condition with falling into coma, shortness of breath, respiratory failure and hypotension.

Through rapid tests, the patient was diagnosed with a septic shock due to the inflammation of the left leg tissue and ketoacidosis caused by the Type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Having assessed the mortality risk, the Vinmec Da Nang doctors, in a prompt fashion, performed artificial ventilation, continuous dialysis, fluid replacement and antibiotics on the patient, plus intravenous insulin infusion to control blood sugar levels.

After three weeks of intensive treatment, the patient has been discharged from hospital following a tremendous recovery.

According to doctor Nguyen Thai Tri, the Head of Emergency Resuscitation Department of the hospital, diabetes can cause many dangerous complications for the patient's body. Infections are common complications facing in patients with diabetes, and the course of the disease is often more severe and complicated than in normal people.

“If the complications of infection are not detected and treated promptly, the mortality rate is very high”, doctor Tri affirmed.

In order to prevent this health problem, patients need to well control their blood sugar levels and developments of the associated diseases, and keep personal hygiene. For wounds, it is necessary to wash them in physiological saline or alcohol, and cover skin scratches as soon as they are discovered, the doctor recommended.
