Viet Nam's National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF) warned of freezing temperatures as three or four spells of cold weather are forecast to sweep through Northern and Central Viet Nam this month.

It is recommended that the public across Da Nang dress appropriately during the day and night as the range of temperatures can be significant.

According to national meteorologists’ projections, the average temperature in January recorded in the northern and central regions is about 0.5 - 1 degrees Celsius lower than that reported in many previous years.

In particular, northern mountainous provinces are warned to brace for frost and rime.

Also, the unpleasant chilly weather pattern combined with eastern wind turbulence at high attitude is expected to be blamed for some stretches of moderate to heavy rain in parts of Central Viet Nam, and abnormal downpours in southern Viet Nam in the remaining days of this month.

Given the range of equatorial low pressure accompanied by the wind turbulence active in the first half of this month, the total rainfall in the mid-central and south-central parts of Viet Nam is predicted to be about 50 - 100mm, and even higher in some of their places.

Meanwhile, the rain accumulation of 10-25 mm is expected to dump into Southern Viet Nam and Central Highlands over the first week of this month.

Over the next seven days, Da Nang is forecast to see the mercury sharply go down to hover at from 17 - 23 degrees Celsius in many of its parts.

Possibly, Da Nang braces for unpleased wet weather with some scattered showers and wind levels 2-3.

Governments of cold weather-affected localities have been urged to ensure cold-resistant measures for the populace and livestock.

It is recommended that the public dress appropriately during the day and night as the range of temperatures can be significant.

Meanwhile, farmers in mountainous areas usually apply measures to keep their cattle and poultry warm, especially during the evening. They are also advised to use canvas to cover barns and ensure cattle get enough food.

The La Nina phenomenon will continue through the first half of 2021, and then the climate will shift to the neutral conditions in summer 2021, the national forcasters said.

As a result, heat waves in summer months of 2021 will occur in the northern and central regions later than and be less severe than in 2020.

Storms and tropical depressions are forecast to happen in the East Sea earlier than in 2020, and hit Viet Nam mainly at the last months of the year.
