Urgent actions to be taken to address saline intrusion and water shortage in Da Nang
In recent days, water levels of the Vu Gia and Yen rivers upstream of the An Trach Dam have been very low.
One of main reasons for causing low water levels in Vu Gia and Yen rivers is thought to be that water regulation gates at the mouth of the Quang Hue River in Quang Nam Province’s Dai Loc District, along with its both riverbanks, have suffered severe damage due to the impact of devastating floods late last year. This has resulted in a large volume of water flowing into Thu Bon River from Vu Gia River.
Therefore, it is expected that Da Nang will face significant risk of severe drought, salinity intrusion and water shortage in the coming time, especially during the peak period of summer season.
Da Nang will take more effective measures in an effort to tackle the very concerning problem.
Specifically, a temporary water dam will be built at the mouth of the Quang Hue River in a bid to ensure that the majority of the water sourced from the Vu Gia River will be released into the Yen River where the An Trach Dam is located.
Also, temporary anti-saline intrusion dams on the Cam Le River will be constructed so as to prevent the Cau Do River from saline intrusion, and ensure a sufficient amount of water for domestic purposes at all times.
