Woman, 72, with underlying conditions in Da Nang dies from Delta variant
A 72-year-old woman with underlying health conditions has died after contracting coronavirus, an official of the Da Nang Department of Health announced on Thursday noon.
The woman tested positve for the virus on June 18 and became the 1,304th COVID patient in Viet Nam. One day later, she was transferred to the Da Nang Lung Hospital for treatment.
She is among 90 locally acquired COVID-19 cases in Da Nang after the city experienced a resurgence of the virus on June 18. All these cases are linked to a cluster in the triangle- shaped area of Le Duan - Ly Thai To - Hoang Hoa Tham streets which was identified on June 18.
The Da Nang Centre for Disease Control (CDC) has sent the SARS-CoV-2 virus specimens of these patients for genetic sequencing. As a result, the highly contagious Delta variant has been found in their gene sequenced samples.
The 72-year-old woman is the first COVID-19 Delta variant-related death which has been reported in Da Nang.
The patient with underlying medical conditions such as obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, disease was diagnosed with COVID-19 on June 18. After days of treatment, her condition turned critically worse with heart, liver and kidney failure and septic shock.
The patient died today (July 8) due to septic shock, multi-organ failure and severe pneumonia with complications caused by COVID-19.
A total of 90 locally-acquired cases linked to the infected security guard at the Duy Tan Plastic Company have been reported in Da Nang so far. In which, 80 are being treated for COVID-19 at the Da Nang Lung Hospital and the remainder are under treatment at the Hoa Vang District Medical Centre, according to data released by the Da Nang Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control.
