This year’s sixth storm downgraded into a tropical depression last night and quickly lost strength into a post-tropical remnant low this early morning, following its landfall in Thua Thien Hue - Quang Nam provinces.

According to the Viet Nam's National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting (NCHF), at 4:00am on September 24, the tropical depression’s centre was positioned at latitude 15°8'N and longitude 107°1'E, right over the Viet Nam - Laos border area with maximum sustained winds dropping to level 6 and travelled northwest at a velocity of 15-20 km/h.

Due to the influence of the circulation of the post-tropical remnant low combined with the eastern wind, on Friday afternoon, the waters off Quang Tri - Quang Ngai provinces experienced gusts at levels 6-7 and rough seas.

On Friday and Saturday, Quang Binh Province is bracing for moderate to heavy downpours with a total rainfall of 80 - 150 mm, and even more than 200mm in some places.

Meanwhile, the Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue are witnessing milder rain at 50-100mm, and more than 150mm in some of their parts.

There is a high risk of flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas and particular flooding in low-lying and riverside areas.

The national meteorologists said that the situation of heavy rain and strong winds at sea due to the circulation of the low-pressure area in combination with the high-altitude eastern winds tends to expand into the north.

Hydroelectric reservoirs in the Vu Gia - Thu Bon River basin have made flood discharge since last night.

By 7:00am on Friday, the flood discharge from hydroelectric reservoirs in the upstream Vu Gia River had decreased sharply, at only 317 m3/s due to the much decrease in the rain amount. The downstream area of the Vu Gia River had not witnessed flooding.

Da Nang, this weekend, is highly likely to see cloudy, some scattered shower accompanied with thunderstorm in some of its parts, says Viet Nam's National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting (NCHF). The mercury will hover at 24 – 31 degrees Celsius,
