As reported that, the patient was admitted to the hospital’s emergency room on December 13 due to severe abdominal pain accompanied by nausea, along with signs of infection and toxicity.

Sub-clinical results showed a large amount of fluid appearing in the peritoneal cavity, inflammatory infiltrates of the epigastrium and the higher infection index.

The patient was diagnosed with generalised peritonitis due to hollow organ perforations and severe prognosis.

In an attempt to save the patient, the doctors successfully conducted two-hour surgery with three small incisions of 0.5 - 1cm onto him.

The doctors also discovered and removed an abnormally shaped, large, congested appendix in order to prevent inflammation in the postoperative period.

According to doctor Le Xuan Long from the Department of Surgery of the Da Nang Family Hospital, hollow-organ perforations account for a significant proportion of acute abdomens requiring an emergent surgery. Failure to identify such emergencies, particularly among elderly patients, leads to high morbidity and mortality.

After the surgery, the male patient has recovered well, whilst the abdominal drainage has been removed and the infection indicators have been put under control. Currently, he can eat and drink normally.
