On Wednesday, the Da Nang Department of Industry and Trade launched the ‘Markets limit the usage of plastic wastes’ model at the downtown Han Market during the 2021-2025 period.

Within the framework of the ‘Plastic waste reduction in urban areas’ project funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation and the 'Plastic Free Ocean’ project funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety through the World Wide Fund for Nature in Viet Nam (WWF-Viet Nam), Da Nang was selected as one of the localities nationwide to carry out activities to reduce plastic waste in urban areas.

In particular, the ‘Markets limit the usage of plastic wastes’ model has been selected as a pilot model for commercial activities.

According to the municipal Department of Industry and Trade, commercial activities consume a large amount of plastic products, resulting in a large amount of waste into the urban garbage system.

Therefore, reducing the use of plastic waste in business and commercial activities was the right strategy towards a green and environmentally-friendly economy in a bid to step by step build a green circular economy and eco-tourism industry, thereby significantly contributing to building Da Nang into an environmentally-friendly city.

The ‘Markets limit the usage of plastic wastes’ model will feature practical activities to raise awareness amongst the city dwellers and market stall holders about the dangers of plastic waste to the environment, make appeals for more joint public efforts to reduce plastic waste, and boost household waste classification at source and recycling.

Also, heed will be paid to promoting initiatives and models to collect used plastic bags from consumers and stimulate green consumption.

The model will be deployed during the periods of 2021-2023, and 2023-2025.
