Promoting efficiency of waste classification at source

After more than 2 years of classifying domestic solid waste at source, Da Nang has achieved many positive results. Specifically, more than 1,760 tons of recyclable waste have been collected.

In the coming time, relevant units and district-level authorities will make more efforts to promote the efficiency of the classification of waste at source, thereby significantly contributing to enhancing sustainable solid waste management.

Every Saturday afternoon, representatives of Party cell, fatherland front board, associations, and mass organizations of Hai Hac 2 residential area in Hai Chau 2 Ward, Hai Chau District, push recyclable trash containers along the roads and alleys to collect all kinds of paper, cans and plastic bottles from households.

Secretary of Hai Hac 2 Residential Area’s Party Cell Pham Xuan Thanh informed that the residential area has widely deployed waste classification at source from September 2020 with the involvement of all 240 households in 4 residential groups.

He added, from the beginning of 2021 until now, VND18 million collected from the sale of dozens of tonnes of recyclable waste has gone to support disadvantaged families and grant scholarships to studious poor pupils in the locality.

According to Vice Chairwoman of the Hai Chau 2 Ward People's Committee Nguyen Thi Viet Trang, the ward has established 9 groups to encourage local residents to sort garbage at source and collect recyclables.

Between September 2020 and mid-December 2021, a combined total of over VND45 million was collected from the sale of recyclable waste. The collected money was used to take care of and support charitable organizations, and the needy in residential area.

Similarly, Thanh Khe District has performed very well in sorting waste at source for more than 2 years and 633 tons of recyclable waste has been collected.

A total of 249 tons of recyclable waste across Hoa Vang District has been collected, whilst other districts collected 130 tons of recyclable waste.

Till date, 83% of the total residential groups citywide have been involved in waste classification at source.

“In the next year, we will continue encouraging more residents to classify trash at source in appropriate manner, as well as appealing for more international organisations to support local localities in waste management and classification at source " emphasized Deputy Director of Environmental Protection Sub-Division under the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment Nguyen Thi Kim Ha.
