Upgrade of intersections to remove accident-prone hotspots
Over the past year, the Da Nang Department of Transport has well cooperated with functional units to upgrade and refurbish a number of intersections citywide, thereby significantly contributing to ensuring the smooth traffic flows and reducing traffic accidents.
The freshly-upgraded intersection of Ngu Hanh Son, Ho Xuan Huong and Le Van Hien streets was open to traffic in early December, 2021 |
Among freshly-upgraded intersections are the intersection of Me Linh Street and Road No. 10B in the Lien Chieu District-based Hoa Khanh Industrial Park, and the intersection of Truong Sa and Huyen Tran Cong Chua streets in Ngu Hanh Son District.
The upgrade of the two intersections is implemented by the municipal Department of Transport, the Motor Vehicle Insurance Fund under the Viet Nam Insurance Association, and some city-based insurance companies under the Viet Nam Insurance Corporation.
Previously, the Authority of the Motor Vehicle Insurance Fund has spent VND 1.4 billion on upgrading the two intersections and rearranging the traffic network there.
Focus has been on removing part of existing median strips to widen the road surface, creating lanes for left and right turns, installing solar-powered traffic control signals, and rearranging traffic networks.
Also, the refurbishment and traffic rearrangement at the intersection of Ngu Hanh Son, Ho Xuan Huong and Le Van Hien streets which is considered to be an accident-prone hotspot for a long time was completed and was open to traffic on December 1.
Driver Le Phuoc Cong, 32, hailing from Quang Tri Province, said, in the past, it was very difficult to cross this intersection during rush hours. But now, there are separate traffic signal lights at the intersection, making it convenient for road users to travel.
Similarly, traffic congestion and accidents were often recorded at the intersection of Xo Viet Nghe Tinh and Nguyen Huu Tho streets in the past.
The upgrade of the intersection has helped to improve traffic flow and provide greater capacity for road users.
According to Deputy Director of the Da Nang Traffic Infrastructure Management Center Le Van Minh Nga, till date, a number of intersections have been upgraded and open to traffic, including the intersections of An Nong and Truong Sa streets, Vo Chi Cong and Tran Dai Nghia, Dinh Liet and Nguyen Dinh Tu, Me Linh and Nguyen Luong Bang, Vuong Thua Vu and Ho Nghinh, Xo Viet Nghe Tinh and Nguyen Huu Tho, and Ngu Hanh Son, Ho Xuan Huong and Le Van Hien.
Moreover, the upgrade and traffic rearrangement at the intersection of Ton Duc Thang and Nam Tran streets are underway and progressing smoothly.
Under the upgrade work, heed is being paid to removing all existing concrete median strips and creating new ones with assembled reinforced concrete structures, asphalting the road surface, increasing the number of lanes in and out of the intersection, and replacing the previous small roundabout.
Chief of Office of the Da Nang Traffic Safety Board Nguyen Trung Nghia revealed that some intersections with high traffic volumes will continue to be upgraded in the near future in order to reduce the risk of accidents and ensure smooth traffic flows.
