Da Nang to promote Earth Hour 2022 campaign online amid high case counts
The Da Nang government has issued a plan to support the 'Earth Hour 2022' campaign to raise the public's awareness of electricity saving and environmental protection.
Da Nang will mark Earth Hour 2022 on Saturday March 26 with practical activities to support action on global climate change. The city will promote this year's campaign through different mediums - for instance, over the television, radio, or social media as no activities with large gatherings are allowed to stem the spread of COVID-19 amid high number of COVID-19 cases.
All government departments and agencies, associations, organisations, businesses and homes across the city will be asked to turn off nonessential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour from 8:30pm - 9:30pm on Saturday March 26 to save electricity.
The municipal Department of Industry and Trade is urged to send documents about the 'Earth Hour 2022' to government departments, agencies, district-level authorities, media agencies and related organisations and individuals to respond to the campaign.
Relevant local agencies will be responsible for displaying posters and banners about Earth Hour 2021 campaign on local streets to encourage local residents to save electricity.
Large LED billboards along the banks of the Han River and on main streets, and decorative lights in public areas in the city, will be turned off during the Earth Hour.
Earth Hour, between 8.30pm and 9.30pm BST, began in 2007, is organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Earth Hour is now one of the world's largest grassroots movements for the environment. Held every year on the last Saturday of March, Earth Hour engages millions of people in more than 180 countries and territories around the world, switching off their lights to show support for our planet.
But Earth Hour goes far beyond the symbolic action of switching off - it has become a catalyst for positive environmental impact, driving major legislative changes by harnessing the power of the people and collective action.
Earth Hour was first organised by WWF in Viet Nam in 2009. Since 2012, the campaign has been organised annually to bring people together to reduce the impact of climate change and protect the environment.
The Earth Hour 2022 campaign has ‘Re-think Plastics' as its theme.
