The Vietnamese Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has approved the environmental impact assessment report of a project to upgrade and expand the existing hazardous waste treatment area at the Khanh Son waste treatment complex  Hoa Khanh Nam Ward, Lien Chieu District. The project will be developed by the Da Nang Urban Environment Joint Stock Company.

Accordingly, the project has a scope of activities in the central and the Central Highlands regions with a land use area of more than 2ha.

In Phase 1 of the project, from September 2022 to March 2023, focus will be on building one hazardous waste incinerator with a capacity of 350kg/hour and 2 hazardous liquid waste treatment systems with a capacity of 24m3/day as part of the project's centralized wastewater treatment system with a capacity of 120m3/day.

Also, Phase 1 will include the expansion of the 300m2 mud drying yard and developing a new mud press with a capacity of 500kg/hour and a rain-proof cover system with an area of 725m2 for hazardous waste burial compartments with an area of 5,000m2.

The main environmental protection works of the project comprise of a centralised wastewater treatment system with a capacity of 120m3/day; an emergency tank with a capacity 125m3, two waste gas treatment systems for the incinerators with a capacity of 350kg/hour/furnace, one treatment system for waste gas generated from the waste fluorescent lamp treatment system, and one hazardous waste storage site covering an area of 180m2.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment has required the project’s developer to implement programmes on environmental management and supervision and other environmental protection measures, in tandem with ensuring traffic safety and following other relevant technical regulations during project implementation in order to prevent and minimize risks to the environment.

Also, special heed should be paid to building and operating a system of wastewater incident tanks capable of recycling and re-treating wastewater, ensuring that wastewater is not discharged into the environment in the event of a breakdown of the wastewater treatment system.

Also, the project's environmental protection works shall be maintained effectively and environmental monitoring programmes must be implemented in accordance with the law.
