Surgeons from the Da Nang Family General Hospital have successfully conducted a laparoscopic removal of 9 colorectal polyps in a 10-year-old child.

As reported, the patient was brought to the Da Nang Family General Hospital by his family in a state of fresh blood in the stools, slow weight gain, and malnutrition.

Through examinations and a number of paraclinical measures, the team of doctors from the Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Unit at the hospital performed flexible endoscopic anesthesia combined with colorectal polypectomy for the patient

Endoscopy results showed that there were 9 polyps measured from 10mm-30mm scattered in the transverse and sigmoid colon, and dangerously, some polyps in the bleeding part of the rectum was causing pain for the patient.

After 30 minutes, the doctor's team successfully performed a colonoscopy, removed all polyps in the colorectal position, and stopped bleeding for the patient.

According to doctor Nguyen Quang Sang from the Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Unit, the pediatric patient suffered from multiple polyps with a narrow colon. This fact caused difficulties for the team of endoscopists and anesthesiologists during anesthesia and endoscopy, clipping polyps as well as hemostasis.

Colonic polyps are common diseases in children with the main symptom being the continuous and prolonged passage of fresh blood and the blood may drip after defecation or become streaky.

Colon polyps in children, if not treated promptly, will become complicated, and in some cases, large ones can cause acute bleeding, which is dangerous to the patient's life.

Flexible Colonoscopy is the most valuable technique for the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal polyps. With this endoscopic technique, some gastrointestinal diseases of children will be diagnosed early and accurately, thus making the treatment effective.

Therefore, when children have symptoms of abdominal pain, especially bloody stools, change in stools, frequency of defecation and abnormal stool characteristics, parents should take them to medical facilities for timely examination and treatment.
