Unusual floods and rains in late March and early April have caused severe damages to many areas of rice and vegetable crops across Da Nang.

In vegetable growing areas affected by the unseasonal downpours, farmers are seen busy restoring agricultural production to minimise damages.

As observed by our reporters at the La Huong vegetable growing area in Hoa Tho Dong Ward, Cam Le District, some farmers were seen preparing land for new planting.

Farmer Thai Dinh Quan in Hoa Tho Dong Ward said the unseasonal downpours dumped more rain on his vegetable crops such as morning glory, umbrellas, cabbage and red amaranth that were ready for harvest. Thanks to timely drainage and special care, he suffered loss of only 60% of revenue.

Director of the La Huong Organic Vegetable Production Cooperative Tran Van Hoang informed three hectares of vegetables produced by members of the cooperative were affected by the unseasonal heavy rains, whilst the remaining 4.5 hectares were not affected much.

Cooperative members have been augmenting their efforts to restore agricultural production. The cooperative has also coordinated with local authorities to calculate how much its damaged property was worth to request superiors to support its members.

Meanwhile, farmers in Hoa Vang District, especially in the communes of Hoa Tien, Hoa Chau, Hoa Phong and Hoa Khuong, are busy pumping water out of their flooded rice paddy fields.

Mrs. Huynh Thi Be, a farmer in Yen Ne 1 Village, Hoa Tien Commune, said right from the beginning of the season, farmers had to re-sow rice seeds two or three times due to floods, but recently, they have experienced unseasonal rains. If Da Nang did not experience unusual rains and floods, this winter-spring rice crop would certainly be very good.

Director of the Hoa Tien 1 General Business and Production Service Cooperative Ngo Van Sinh also excitedly said that despite being affected by floods and rains, the cooperative's winter-spring rice crop would have a good harvest and high yield.

Mr. Phan Ngoc Hung, the Director of the Hoa Chau 1 General Business and Production Service Cooperative, underlined that the cooperative's 25ha of rice bloomed beautifully. Particularly, 10ha of rice which was heavily affected by floods and rains was quickly restored. This year's winter-spring rice crop is also expected to be a good harvest.

According to the Sub-Bureau of Agriculture under the Da Nang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, starting from April 1, the unit has guided and asked farmers and cooperatives to urgently mobilise forces to clear the water flow and drain water in rice fields, as well as bunch flattened rice plants to wait for the harvest day.
