The image of the stairs leading up to the buildings being swept clean and airy in Nai Hung 1, Nai Hien Dong Ward, Son Tra District, Da Nang has impressed those coming here for the first time. That is the result of the implementation of the model "No-garbage stairs" by the staff and people in the area.

Mrs Dang Thi Ngoc Hoa, a 57-year-old woman residing on the 5th floor of apartment F2, Nai Hung 1, has regularly swept the stairs leading down to the floors. She likes cleanliness so she voluntarily cleans the stairs whenever she finds them dirty. Even though no one pays for her, she is happy doing this job on a daily basis.

So far, her family has lived here for nearly 15 years. “At first, when I was cleaning the stairs, a few people passing by were surprised, but they have gradually understood and become more conscious of keeping the stairs clean.

In the past, cigarette butts, plastic bottles and plastic bottles were thrown everywhere on the stairs, but now that image is no longer there because everyone has joined hands to keep the environment clean and beautiful," said Mrs Hoa.

The apartment building has two staircases which are in charge by Mrs Hoa and Ms Le Thi Gai, a 56-year-old poor woman.  Although she works as a cleaner for a  restaurant from morning till night, she has still taken advantage of her free time to clean the stairs of the apartment.

According to Mrs Gai, if every person can engage in cleaning the environment of this living space, the apartment will be cleaner and more beautiful.

For the time being, Nai Hung 1 area has 6 residential groups, of which 5 residential groups live in 10 5-storey apartment blocks. Most of the 360 households in the area are allocated apartments because they were in the area of compensation, poor households or households with difficulties.

As shared by Ms Trinh Thi Nhat Le, Head of Steering Board of Vietnamese Fatherland Front activities in Nai Hung 1, the model of "No-garbage stairs" was developed by the unit, leaders of residential groups, and apartment managers to encourage people not to litter indiscriminately, pour water or put items encroach on the aisles in the corridors as well as the stairs.

The model has received people's support and raised their awareness of environmental protection. They also contribute money to buy light bulbs on shared aisles of stairs and corridors to give enough light for movement.

“Since the implementation of the model of “No-garbage stairs”, it is noticeable that people here are more aware and more united. Thanks to the great merits of those who quietly clean the stairs day and night like Mrs Hoa, Mrs Gai and the people's cooperation, the model has generally achieved success.

Moreover, people have mobilized each other to contribute money to paint the façade, to buy flags and flowers to decorate during holidays so the area has gradually become bright and spacious, "said Ms Le
