Residents living near Hoa Phu 3C regulation lake in Hoa Minh Ward, Lien Chieu District, Da Nang have complained for many days, about the strong stench of mass dead fish.

Fish dies en masse in the Hoa Phu 3C regulation lake

As observed by the Da Nang Newspaper's reporters, the Hoa Phu 3C regulation lake is located behind the Da Nang Oncology Hospital. The situation of dead fish has happened for the past 4 days, with a strong stench.

Thousands of dead fish float on the lake shore. Many dead fish were decomposing, thus emitting a strong stench, creating a sloppy landscape, directly affecting the lives of people near the scene.

Bui Thanh Phong, a male resident living in Hoa Minh Ward said: “The fish died en masse white floating in Hoa Phu 3C Lake. Whenever it is hot, fish in Hoa Phu lake die abnormally. The wind brought the smell of dead fish into the residential area, forcing us to close the door. Many business households and traders in this area are also on vacation”.

Likewise, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Van also residing in Hoa Minh Ward said that this was not the first time she had seen dead fish in this regulation lake area. Decomposed dead fish made the lake's surface dark and stinky.

It is known that, upon the reception of complaint from people about the mass dead fish, the Da Nang Sewerage and Wastewater Treatment Company under the municipal Department of Construction mobilised workers and specialised means, coordinate with relevant units to retrieve 5 tonnes of fish carcasses for later transportation to the Khanh Son landfill for treatment.

Also, chemicals were used to deodorise and clean up the environment.

According to Mr. Ngo Thanh Hoang, Deputy Head of the Natural Resources and Environment Board of Lien Chieu District, the weather changed suddenly in the past few days. The heat shock and heavy rain caused by a recent storm were blamed for mass fish deaths.

In the coming time, the district’s competent agencies will take solutions to overcome the phenomenon of mass dead fish in Hoa Phu 3C lake.

The Da Nang Sewerage and Wastewater Treatment Company will strengthen the sanitation of the lake surface, ensure the collection and thorough treatment of dead fish, and operate an aerator to increase the amount of oxygen in the lake.
