It is expected that the power demand will still have growth rate of about 8.5% over the course of the next five years.

However, there are still obstacles ahead to ensure a stable power supply during the 2020-2025 period, especially in the case of extreme weather events.

The national capacity reserve rate by 2025, excluding renewable energy, is only about 18%, and the shortfall in power output may reach 27.7 billion kWh by 2025.

The information was released by the Energy Saving and Sustainable Development Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade at a Thursday conference themed ‘National energy saving in 2022’.

During the event, a spokesperson for the Energy Saving and Sustainable Development Department underlined the importance of economical and efficient use of energy in ensuring national energy security, as well as contributing to the implementation of Viet Nam's commitments in the Paris Agreement on global climate change adaption, and at the COP26 summit on the journey to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050.

The Vietnamese government has made ceaseless efforts to make energy use more efficient through the issuance of many related policies as well as the launching of specific activities to promote economical and efficient use of energy throughout society.
