Thundery downpours expected across the country today

According to Viet Nam’s National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely to occur in Central Highlands and Southern Viet Nam on Wednesday. National forecasters indicate heavy to extremely heavy rains of 30 mm to 50mm, and even in excess of 90mm,  in a 24 hour period, at isolated places in these areas. However, reduction in rainfall activity is likely in Central Highlands and Southern Viet Nam from Thursday, July 14, the national weather service has indicated.

Showers with thunderstorms at most places with heavy rainfall at isolated places during late afternoon and night hours are also likely over the Mid and South Central Region today. Localized rainfall accumulations could reach 10mm to 30mm, and localized accumulations in excess of 50mm in a 24 hour period are possible on Wednesday.

Thunderstorms can produce tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong winds in the warning areas. Forecasters have also issued warnings of flash floods and landslides for mountainous areas in Central Highlands, and localized flooding alerts are in place in low-lying and riverside areas.

Today, the national weather service issued a warning for strong showers and thunderstorms for the offshore areas stretching Binh Thuan to Ca Mau and South of the East Sea (including the western part of the Truong Sa Islands). These areas will see strong gradually increasing the southwest winds at levels 6- 7, and the gusts reaching levels 8 to 9, as well as experience rough seas with waves as high as 3-5m.

The offshore areas stretching from Ca Mau to Kien Giang, the Gulf of Thailand, south of the East Sea (including the waters of the Truong Sa Islands) will see gradually increasing southwest winds at levels 5 to 6, and gustiness of levels 7 to 8, as well as experience rough seas with waves as high as 2-4m.

The national weather forecasters on Wednesday also issued thunderstorm and heavy shower warning for vessels operating in coastal areas of South Central Region.

On Wednesday, scattered showers and thunderstorms are predicted over the parts from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien-Hue during the late afternoon and night hours with heavy rainfall likely in some places. Maximum temperatures in these areas are expected to hover around 30-33 degrees Celsius, even above 34 degrees Celsius at isolated localtions while minimum temperature will be in the range of 24-27 degrees Celsius.

The forecaster has warned that there will be showers with thunder at isolated localtions in the parts from Da Nang to Binh Thuan during daytime with scattered showers and thunderstorms expected during late afternoon and night hours while a few places in the region will see heavy rainfall. Temperatures in these areas can expect lows of 24 to 27 degrees Celsius and highs of 30 to 33 degrees Celsius, even above 33 degrees Celsius in some places.

Today expects the sky to remain mostly cloudy over Central Highlands with moderate rainfall and thunder likely during daytime while heavy to very heavy rains are expected at some places. Maximum and minimum temperatures will hover around 26-29 degrees Celsius, even above 29 degrees Celsius at isolated localtions, and 20-23 degrees Celsius, respectively.
