Viet Nam’s National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has warned that the Northern Viet Nam and North Central Coast and some places of the Mid-central region are coming under the influence of the northeast monsoon from Sunday night.

The national weather forecasters said that a cold front is ushering a cold airmass into the Northern region. The strong cold front will allow temperatures to drop significantly in the warning areas.

Cold temperatures are expected to strike the northern region and North Central Coast from Sunday, October 9 as temperatures are predicted to drop to 19 to 21 degrees Celsius, and even 16 to 18 degrees Celsius in their mountainous areas. The coolest temperatures are in the early morning and at night

By the coastal areas they will see high winds at level 4 to 5, and farther inland you could find northeast winds at level 3.

From Sunday afternoon, the Gulf of Tonkin and the Northern part of the East Sea (including the waters of the Hoang Sa Archipelago) could see northeasterly winds at level 7, and gustiness of level 7, and experience rough seas with waves as high as 4m -6m.

National forecasters predict that moderate to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are likely to lash over the Northern region, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An from Sunday into Monday morning with extremely heavy rain likely in some places under the influence of a cold front.

Moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms are likely to occur in the parts from Ha Tinh to Quang Ngai, including Da Nang, from Sunday until Tuesday, October 11 with the possibility of very heavy rainfall at a few places.

There are also warnings of thunderstorms, lightning strikes, high winds, tornadoes and hail in these areas. Forecasters have also issued warnings of flash floods and landslides for mountainous areas in the region, and localized flooding alerts are in place in low-lying and riverside areas. The advisory urges residents to ‘be aware’ of inclement weather. Local residents are advised to get ready for such weather conditions in an attempt to reduce the risk of possible damages.

Some places in the Central region, Central Highlands and the Southern region received more than 50mm rain from 7:00pm on Saturday to 3:00am on Sunday, October 9. In detail, 56.6mm of rain were recorded in Da Nang’s Hiep Bac, 68.2mm rain observed in Quang Nam Province’s Thang Binh, 103.2mm rain in Phu Yen’s Hoa Vinh, 63.2mm rain in Bien Tre Province’s Thanh Phong.
