Rain continues to batter Da Nang through Wednesday

Heavy rain has battered Da Nang since Monday night, with downpours resulting in waterlogging in some streets. A weather warning for moderate to heavy rain with localised extremely heavy falls has been issued for Da Nang by the Mid-central Region Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting. The warning is in place for the city through Wednesday.

Da Nang recorded extremely heavy rainfall during moring and noon hours on Tuesday.

From 7:00pm on Monday to 1:00pm on Tuesday, October 25, the city received between 50mm and 110mm of rain while 120mm-150mm fell in the coastal areas.

Waterlogging was reported from many streets after heavy rain has hit the city since Monday night.

Moderate to heavy rain with isolated very heavy rainfall is forecast to continue lashing Da Nang during the late afternoon and night hours on Tuesday but rainfall intensity is expected to gradually decrease from Tuesday night.

From 1:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, 20-45mm of rain were recorded in the city while more than 50mm occurred in the coastal areas and the southern part.

From 4:00pm to 7:00pm on Tuesday, the total rainfall amount will be 15mm-35mm in common in the city while more than 40mm of rain could fall in some places.

From 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday to 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 26, as much as 20m-40mm could fall in the city and even more than 50mm in some places.

From 1:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 26, the city could receive between 10mm and 30mm of rain and even more than 40mm possible at isolated places.

From 7:00pm on Monday through Wednesday, October 26, the total rainfall amount is predicted to be 100mm-200mm in common in the city while over 300mm of rain could dump at isolated places.

Due to the heavy rain and water logging, some schools in Da Nang, especially those located in low-lying areas, closed for students and teachers on Tuesday afternoon.

The Da Nang Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue and Civil Defence is urging authorities at local level and relevant units to take taking mitigation measures in response to heavy rain and flooding in Vu Gia River and other rivers in Da Nang.

The focus must be on taking all necessary measures to protect the safety of local residents and their properties during extreme weather conditions in an effort to prevent the loss of life and minimize the damage to property from heavy rain and flooding.

Heed must be paid to deploying personnel to deeply flooded streets to set up vehicle barriers to stop driving through deep water in order to ensure the safety of road users. Importance is attached to resolutely banning people from travelling or fishing on rivers, low-lying areas, flooded areas, underground passages, flooded bridges, forests, mountains and landslide prone areas.

Special attention must be paid to taking proactive measures to immediately cut off power supply in deeply flooded areas, reinforce electric concrete poles to prevent falling in inclement weather conditions, ensure power supply for flood control pumping stations, and restore power as quickly and as safely as possible to affected areas.

Heed must be must keeping a close watch on severe weather development, and keep local residents timely informed about severe weather conditions in order to help them protect their property from heavy rains and flooding. In addition, importance must be attached to assisting local residents to prepare for heavy rains in an attempt to reduce the risk of possible damages.
