Timely rescue operations in Da Nang during flooding after torrential rainfall

As of of 4:00 am on Saturday, October 15, no loss of life has been reported in Da Nang during floods and flash floods in urban areas after torrential rainfall lashed the city on Friday afternoon, according to the Da Nang Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue and Civil Defense.  Many urban areas were in deep waters at 10:00 pm on Friday following heavy downppours. The timely rescue mission by police and military personnel has helped affected people reach safe ground.

The Lien Chieu District authorities have mobilized all forces and vehicles, including military vehicles, to reach residential areas that were stranded in waist-deep water to move them to safe places. Timely rescue operations were carried out in such deep-flooded areas as residential setttings in Ton Duc Thang and Nguyen Luong Bang, Da Son, Hoang Van Thai, Me Suot, Pham Nhu Xuong, Hoang Minh Thao streets, plus the downstream area of Cu De River.

In Cam Le district, the forces rescued one person who was swept away at Khe Can Canal in Hoa An Ward and some people stranded by floodwaters at the intersection of Nguyen Nhan - Cach Mang Thang Tam streets.

Efforts were made to reach and rescue many people caught in a flash flood in Hoi Yen, Hoa Bac Commune, Hoa Vang District while 58 forest workers in the same commune were brought to a safe place. In addition, special canoes were used to save stranded people in Hoa Phong Commune‘s Tuy Loan Tay 1, and Hoa Nhon Commune’s Phuoc Hung Nam Village.

Besides, 1,432 people from 627 families were evacuated from areas prone to flash floods and landslides in Hoa Ninh, Hoa Nhon, Hoa Phu, Hoa Bac and Hoa Son communes, Hoa Vang District.

Furthermore, 30 people in Thanh Khe District and 69 people in Son Tra District were helped reach safe places.

Many major roads in Hai Chau District were submerged in the deep and many houses were stranded in deep waters, especially in Thanh Binh and Thuan Phuoc wards. The worst-hit areas were Thuan Phuoc and Thanh Binh wards.

All 6 wards in Cam Le District were flooded deeply while some places were submerged by more than 1.5m of water.

Most of Lien Chieu district completely were submerged in water while some places were submerged in nearly 2m deep water, causing traffic disruption on major roads.

In Hoa Vang district, more than 70 villages in 10 communes were severely flooded and a section of National Highway 14B was submerged by 1-1.5m of water.

So far, floodwaters have receded in flooded streets across the city. However, many roads and residential areas in affected areas due to flooding on Yen, Cam Le, Cu De and Tuy Loan rivers are still submerged under water.

According to the Mid-central Region Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting, the water level on the Vu Gia River is rising while that in the Cam Le River reaches its peak at above alert level 2. During Saturday morning and afternoon, the water level in the Vu Gia River is expected to reach alert level 3 while that in the Cam Le River will reach alet level 2 and then slowly recede, regional forecasters warned.

Forecasters have also issued flood warnings to low-lying areas, plus areas along rivers and streams in the communes of Hoa Phong, Hoa Chau, Hoa Phuoc, Hoa Tien, Hoa Nhon and Hoa Phong, all in Hoa Vang District. Alerts for flash floods and landslides are in place in mountainous areas and areas along rivers and streams, especially in Hoa Bac, Hoa Son, Hoa Lien and Hoa Ninh communes, all in Hoa Vang District, the Son Tra Peninsula in Son Tra District, ​​Hoa Hiep Bac Ward in Lien Chieu District.
