New cold front to bring rains and thunder

On Tuesday afternoon and night, May 9, South Central Coast, the Central Highlands and the Southern region of Viet Nam experienced scattered showers and thunderstorms with localized moderate to heavy downpours, Viet Nam’s National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has said.

From 1:00pm on Tuesday to 3:00am on Wednesday, rainfall in excess of 50mm were recorded in some parts of these areas. In detail, as much as 104.6mm of rain dumped in Phuoc Huu (Ninh Thuan Province), 81.7mm in Hai Ninh (Binh Thuan Province), 76.2mm in Cam An Bac (Khanh Hoa Province ), 110.4mm in Quang Tan (Dak Nong Province ), 53.8mm in Ia RS Nursery (Gia Lai Province), 60.8mm in Xuan Truong (Lam Dong), 104mm in My Thanh Nam (Tien Giang Province), 81.4mm in Vang Quoi Dong (Ben Tre Province ), 66mm in Hon Dat Town (Kien Giang Province), 61.6mm in Tieu Can (Tra Vinh Province), 60.2mm in Binh Thang (Binh Duong), and 58.6mm in Tan Thanh Town (Long An Province).

The national weather service has forecast widespread light or moderate rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls and a chance for scattered thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours in South Central Coast, the Central Highlands and the Southern region on Wednesday and Thursday. Heavy rainfall of 10mm - 30mm in 24 hours is predicted in common across these areas with more than 50 mm of rain expected to dump at isolated places.

Another cold front is heading south towards Viet Nam, and it is forecast to hit the country on Thursday. It will have ample opportunity to create widespread moderate rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy downpours and scattered thunderstorms across the Northern region and the parts from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien- Hue on Thursday and Friday.

The total rainfall amount in 24 hours will be 20mm to 50mm in common in these areas while more than 70mm of rain could fall in some places.

Thunderstorms can produce tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong winds, national forecasters have warned.

Localized flooding alerts are in place in low-lying areas.

The national weather service has issued heavy rain advisory, indicating the affected areas and the expected rainfall to alert the public of potential flooding due to heavy rain in the warning areas, so as to take precautionary measures. National forecasters also remind affected areas to take appropriate responsive actions to alleviate the impact of flooding in concerned areas.
