Successful removal of extra fingers and toes
Doctors at Da Nang’s Family Hospital have successfully removed a 6-year-old child’s additional fingers and toes in a recent surgical operation that lasted more than 3 hours.
Previously, a woman from Quang Nam Province, took her 6-year-old child with 12 fingers and 12 toes to the Da Nang-based Family Hospital for medical checkups.
According to the child patient’s mother, her child’s extra fingers and toes develop and have normal bones, but the excess makes her activities hindered, especially when exercising, running and jumping.
After taking X-rays and performing paraclinical techniques, the hospital’s doctors consulted and ordered surgery to remove 4 extra fingers and toes. After two days of surgery, the child patient’s hands were able to grasp objects and no longer had discomfort and pain.
According to doctors, around 2 in 1,000 babies born each year has some form of polydactyly. However, the simultaneous occurrence of polydactyly in all extremities at the same time is an extremely rare case.
