Da Nang now owns two placed transfer stations, one in Son Tra District and one in Hai Chau District. Transfer stations temporarily house all of the trash from residential properties in preparation for hauling the materials to the Khanh Son Landfill. These stations keep solid waste moving, helping maintain clean and sanitary conditions within the community and the local environment. By consolidating solid waste collection and disposal points, transfer stations help local residents reduce the cost of hauling waste to these remote disposal sites, reduce environmental pollution, and keep the city clean and beautiful.

Waste transfer stations offer a solution to the unsightly and often smelly issues that come with municipal solid waste disposal. With specialized compaction equipment and a specific, step-by-step process, the waste journey through the municipal transfer stations and the transportation of the waste to its final destination is a seamless undertaking. Transfer Stations act as a collection point for all different types of waste streams generated in the urban centres of Da Nang. These stations are typically used to consolidate waste resulting in more economical hauling of waste. When the city is consolidating waste, it means local vehicles have shorter journeys and shorter hauls for the large lorries with much higher density loads. This helps to reduce the amount of road travel that happens in the process of disposing waste, reducing road wear, air pollution and the carbon footprint of the journey.

With the use of modern technologies and increased compaction capacity, the transfer station located in Son Tra District has operated at full capacity and increased its daily operating hours at the request of local authorities to handle all household garbage generated in the district.

Mr Tran Mai Truong, the Acting Director of the Son Tra Environmental Enterprise said that on the average, from 190 tons to 210 tons of district waste per day are produced and collected. The increase in the capacity of the district transfer station make local garbage collection more convenient and more efficient in order to keep the district neat and clean.

Recently, trash dumping hot spots located on such streets as Bui Quoc Hung, Ho Han Thuong, Tran Hung Dao, Chinh Huu, Vuong Thua Vu, Tran Dinh Dan, Loseby have been cleared. Mr. Truong added that the Son Tra Environmental Enterprise will continue to increase mechanization in residential solid waste collection, as well as make greater efforts to follow best practices for efficient solid waste collection and operational efficiency in the Tho Quang Waste Transfer Station in September.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son, a resident of Nai Hien Dong Ward, Son Tra District said that spontaneous dumps which caused unpleasant odors have already cleared so that local people are now very happy when walking along the streets in the morning or in the evening as they no longer see such a dump in order to ensure the aesthetic of the district, and the city as a whole.

Although the Le Thanh Nghi Waste Transfer Station located in Hai Chau District has recently put into operation, it has contributed to improving the efficiency of household waste collection in the district.

According to Mr. Ho Trong Khanh, the Director of the Hai Chau Environmental Enterprise, the Le Thanh Nghi Transfer Station went through its first trial phase from July 11 to August 11. The station opens daily from 7:00 p.m. until 3:00 a.m the following day. It can handle a total of 100-130 tons of waste per day. Trucks under 5 tons are used to dump their solid waste into the transfer station.

The operation of the Le Thanh Nghi Transfer Station has brought benefits to sanitation workers as their income has increased considerably thanks to mechanization in residential solid waste collection. Waste volume collected by each truck with mechanical arms has increased by 30-40%.

Starting from September 11, the Le Thanh Nghi Transfer Station is expected to open daily from 7:00 am until 3:00 am the following day, thereby contributing to making solid waste collection more efficient, and reducing overall transportation costs, air emissions, energy use, and truck traffic. Approximately 220-230 tons of waste per day are expected to bring to the Le Thanh Nghi Transfer Station so that temporary disposal sites in the district will be closed while the number of street trash bins will be reduced significantly. In addition, residential solid waste generated in the district will be collected quickly in efforts to ensure the aesthetic of the district, and the city as whole, as well as keep the city clean and beautiful.
