In his remarks at the workshop, municipal Party Committee Secretary Nguyen Van Quang said that Da Nang is located in the Central Viet Nam, with a mainland coast that is susceptible to extreme weather and is directly affected by climate change such as tides, storms, floods and sea level rise.

With regard to the policy of socio-economic development, Da Nang is oriented towards an ecological urban area and the city has three out of five key economic sectors associated with climate change response and environmental protection.

He, therefore, stressed the need for the city to respond to climate change, strengthen natural resource management, and protect the environment during the city’s progress.

Mr. Quang revealed after 10 years of implementing Resolution 24-NQ/TW, a number of indicators on environmental protection have so far been achieved and exceeded. In particular, the air quality index (IQ) always remains below 100, the rate of industrial wastewater is collected and treated up to standards, 100% of households use clean water, 100% of domestic waste is collected and treated, and forest coverage rate reaches 45.6%.

In addition, Da Nang has been recognised and appreciated by domestic and foreign ministries, branches and organisations, and won many awards for environmental protection work.

Secretary Quang expressed his belief that the workshop would propose key and urgent goals, tasks and solutions to move towards a green, circular, low-carbon economy, and especially helping Viet Nam reach net zero by 2050 as committed to the international community.

He emphasised that his city will absorb the experience of experts, scientists and local people in implementing tasks and solutions on climate change response, resource management and environmental protection in the city in the near future.
