Heavy rain expected to linger into October 17 in Da Nang

Da Nang experienced heavy to extremely heavy rainfall events from 2:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Friday, which led to partial flooding in many streets and low-lying areas but flood waters quickly receded in these areas. The most affected areas were Tho Quang and Nai Hien Dong wards of Son Tra District, Hoa Cuong Nam Ward of Hai Chau District, Thac Gian, An Khe, Thanh Khe Dong wards of Thanh Khe District, and Hoa Phat Ward of Cam Le District.

The Mid-central Region Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting predicts moderate to heavy rain with localised very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over the parts from Quang Binh to Quang Nam, including Da Nang, from Friday through Sunday, October 15. Quang Ngai is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall with localised heavy to very heavy falls and thunderstorm chance during the said period.

A weather warning for rain remains in place for Da Nang until October 17 with moderate to heavy rainfall and isolated heavy dowpours and thunderstorms an expected to linger. Heavy rainfall of 150mm-300mm is predicted in common across the city with more than 350mm of rain expected to dump at isolated places from 10:00 a.m. October 13 to 10:00 a.m. on October 15.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected for the parts from Quang Binh to Da Nang, and isolated parts could even receive a heavy spell from noon of October 15 through October 17. During the forecast period, the total rainfall amount will be 100mm-250mm in common in these areas while more than 300mm of rain could fall in some places. Furthermore, light to moderate rain with isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Quang Nam and Quang Ngai provinces. As much as 80mm-200mm of rain could fall in the two provinces, and even more than 250mm in some places.

Regional weather forecasters have also issued warnings of flash floods and landslides for mountainous areas, and localized flooding alerts are in place in low-lying and urban areas. Thunderstorms can produce tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong winds in the parts from Quang Binh to Quang Nam, including Da Nang, regional forecasters have warned.

The regional weather service is urging authorities in affected areas to take appropriate precautionary measures to cope with floods, flash floods, landslides brought by heavy downpours, as well as and hazardous weather at sea in order to minimise losses owing to heavy rain and severe weather events.

The regional weather service also issues flood warnings for Vu Gia River and other rivers in Da Nang from October 13 into October 17 as these rivers could face flood risk with floodwater expected to peak from 3m - 5m at their upstream areas and 0.5 - 1m at their downstream areas. The water level in these rivers is likely to reach its peak to reach alarm level 1 and below.
