New Low-Pressure Area expected to continue soaking Central Viet Nam, rainfall to gradually decline in Da Nang from Oct. 18

Central Viet Nam, including Da Nang, could continue to be in soaking wet conditions through October 18 due to the combined effect of new low-pressure area and strong southeast winds.  

Meteorologists at Viet Nam’s National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting are watching a low pressure area over the East Sea. The low is anticipated to strengthen and become a well-marked low-pressure area or even a tropical depression as it heads west-northwest toward mainland Viet Nam during the next 24 hours, the national weather service has said.

The system is expected to concentrate into a well-marked low-pressure or even a tropical depression while gradually moving west-northwest toward mainland Viet Nam during the next 24 hours. The system is likely to reach mainland Viet Nam from October 16 – 17, and it will continue to bring heavy rain to Central Viet Nam, including Da Nang, from October 16-18.

A strong wind warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for all coastal waters of the parts from Quang Tri to Binh Dinh, including Da Nang. The warning is also issued to all vessels operating in the affected areas. In addition, fishpond operators in the warning areas are advised to take the necessary measures to minimize rain-related losses.

As per the national weather service, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is likely over the parts from Quang Binh to Binh Dinh, including Da Nang, on Sunday with the total rainfall amount expected to reach 150mm to 250mm in common, and even over 400mm possible in some places. Especially, Thien Thien -Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam are being warned to brace for heavy rain, with rainfalls of 300-500mm and even more than 800mm at isolated locations. As much as 50-100mm of rain could fall over Ha Tinh Province, and even more than 150mm in some places.

Shower and thunderstorm chance will develop during the afternoon and evening hours over South Central Coast, Central Highlands and Southern region while some places of these areas will see moderate to heavy falls. Rain amounts are forecast to generally average between 20mm and 40 mm with more than 70mm possible in some places.

From the night of October 16 into October 17, heavy rainfall is likely to impact the Northern region, and the parts from southern Nghe An to Binh Dinh, including Da Nang. National forecasters indicate heavy rainfall of 100-300mm across these areas, and even in excess of 500mm at isolated places.

From October 17 onwards, the central region will continue to receive heavy rainfall.

However, the Mid-Central Region Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting has forecast that there will be a gradual decrease in rainfall over Da Nang from October 18.

As per the regional weather service, moderate to heavy rain with isolated very heavy rainfall and thunderstorm chance is forecast to continue lashing the city until October 17 but rainfall intensity is expected to gradually decrease from October 18.

From October 15 into the morning of October 17, as much as 150mm-300mm of rain could fall in the city, and even more than 400mm at isolated locations.

On October 17, the city could receive between 50mm and 100mm of rain with more than 150mm possible in some places.

The national weather service has placed Thua Thien-Hue and Da Nang under a natural hazard alert at level 4 for heavy rain, tornadoes and lightning while alert level 3 has been issued for Quang Nam, alert level 2 for Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Quang Ngai, alert level 1 for Ha Tinh and Binh Dinh.

National weather forecasters have also issued warnings of flash floods and landslides for mountainous areas, and localized flooding alerts are in place in low-lying and urban areas. Thunderstorms can produce tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong winds in the affected areas, national forecasters has warned.

The national weather service has indicated the affected areas and the expected rainfall to alert the public of potential flooding due to heavy rain in the warning areas, so as to take precautionary measures. National forecasters also remind affected areas to take appropriate responsive actions to alleviate the impact of flooding in concerned areas.

Residents in Central Viet Nam, including Da Nang, are advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings to take all the steps to protect themselves and their property during heavy rains.
